Moving house can be emotionally challenging for a number of reasons. You may have lived in the house you’re leaving ever since you can remember, or may have created some of the most significant memories of your lifetime under your current property’s roof. Or, you may really love your neighbours, and are convinced you’ll never find such wonderful friends again.
Although moving home can be daunting for this exact reason, there are many brilliant ways to bond with your new neighbours. Here we share our top tips for doing so:
Introduce yourself straight away
Remember that your neighbours are also likely to feel nervous when they realise someone new is moving in next door, especially in tight-knit communities. To make sure you settle any concerns they may have and start off on the right foot straight away, go and knock on their door as soon as you’ve unloaded the last box of your belongings. They’re sure to appreciate the polite gesture and may even offer to introduce you to other people in the local area.
Invite them over for a cup of tea
There’s nothing like a cup of tea or coffee to bond two strangers. Once you’ve had the opportunity to unpack your belongings and settle in, why don’t you invite your neighbours over for a drink and a slice of cake? This is a great way to show that you’re sociable, friendly and open to making friends, and they’ll likely return the offer at some point!
Once you’ve settled into your new abode, it’s customary to throw a housewarming party. Your friends and family will want to see your new home, so this is the perfect opportunity to invite everyone around for a celebration. This is also a great chance to bond with your neighbours; inviting them over will make them feel included and appreciated, and they’re also much less likely to mind a bit of noise if they’re part of the fun.
Offer your assistance
If you notice a neighbour struggling with shopping bags one day or wrestling with the weeds in their front garden, consider offering your assistance. Simply offering to drive them to the local supermarket or lending them a trowel is a great way to show your new neighbours you’re willing to help out and will secure your position as part of the local community quickly and easily. If you help your neighbours out every now and then, they’ll also be much more likely to reciprocate if you ever need a favour.
No matter how well you’ve bonded with your neighbours, the friendship is sure to sour if you’re not a considerate member of the local community. Playing music loudly throughout the night, driving recklessly, leaving your front garden in a mess and hosting parties regularly may not make you the most favourable neighbour, especially if you live in a residential area with families and elderly individuals. Make sure you’re respectful and polite at all times, as this is sure to be appreciated.
