When a loved one plans to move abroad, this is a new and exciting time for them, yet it’s also bittersweet. Seeing a close family member or friend move away can be hard, leaving you feeling sad, lost and even lonely - it’s natural to mourn their absence.
Read on below as we give some of our tips for how to cope with a loved one moving away.
Although you’ll be sad to see them go, think about how your loved one will be feeling. Not only is this a big decision for them, but they’ll be leaving all their loved ones behind and going to a place where they don’t necessarily know anyone - this is extremely daunting!
Reassure them that you support their decision and that you’ll do all that you can to help make the process easier for them. Perhaps you could offer to help them with the move, whether that be buying some packing supplies and helping them pack, or recommending a moving company they can use that offers international removals.
Saying goodbye is an emotional time, and these feelings don’t just instantly go away. You are valid in feeling sad, lost or even confused about your feelings, but that doesn’t mean you should bear the weight of them alone.
Confiding in others and talking about how you feel or asking for support can be cathartic, taking an emotional weight off your shoulders whilst helping you process your thoughts and feelings in a healthy way on your journey to accepting that your loved one has left.
Feeling low after a loved one has moved away can impact your daily routine more than you’d first expect. It can be hard not to stew on your feelings and instead force yourself to be positive and proactive. It’s okay to feel this way, but try your hardest to make some time for yourself and partake in some self-care.
Whether you go out for a calming walk in nature, pick up a new hobby you enjoy or simply treat yourself to a relaxing bath and a facemask, caring for yourself in this way can have a positive impact on your mental and physical health, naturally picking you up when you feel down without invalidating these feelings.
Just because your loved one has moved away doesn’t mean you won’t ever see or speak to them again - with the technology we have today, they’re simply a phone or video call away!
Keeping in touch through social media or over the internet (or even by going old school and through hand-written letters sent in post!) is a great way to stay connected and keep the bond the two of you have, making the distance that little bit easier.
