We’re sure that you’ll agree with us when we say moving home is a stressful experience, no matter how many times you do it - even more so when you’re moving to a completely different part of the country.
Whether you’re moving from up north to down south, or from a large city to a rural countryside village, there are some tips you can follow to help you feel better prepared for managing a long distance move.
Read on below as we share these tips with you.
If you’re moving home locally, then you may be lucky enough to move all your belongings from your old home to your new one in a few short trips on moving day. However, this isn’t exactly feasible when it comes to long distance moves. As such, you’ll want to start planning the logistics of how you will transport all your belongings early in advance.
You may choose to hire a moving van in order to transport your belongings all together where they won’t fit into your car. Hiring a moving company could be more efficient, as you’ll have experts on hand to help with the necessary vehicles to move however much you need. Alternatively, looking into self-storage services may make it easier to stagger the move, rather than attempting to move your belongings all in one go.
Ensure that you also stock up on packaging supplies early, allowing you to start the packing process ahead of time and keep everything clearly organised.
Where possible, we recommend you break down big, bulky items. This could mean disassembling pieces of furniture and boxing them up, then reassembling them again at the other end. Though this may seem like an inconvenience, it will free up plenty of space and make the journey to your new home a lot more efficient and streamlined.
Before packing up all of your household items, consider the layout of your new home - especially if you’re downsizing.
Whilst your current furniture may fit nicely into the rooms of the home you’re leaving, if some of the corresponding rooms in your new home are smaller in size or different in layout then trying to fit all your furniture and belongings into them may lead to them feeling cramped and dysfunctional.
If this is the case, then consider compromising on the items you wish to take and those which may be better for you to sell or donate to save on space.
