The capital of France is an extremely popular destination for a wide range of tourists; from romantic couples, to families, school exchange trips or a solo traveller looking to explore. Most people are familiar with high traffic spots such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre or Notre Dame, but what about some of the more hidden areas Paris has to offer?
There’s plenty to explore in this beautiful city, so if you’re looking for some more unusual sites or places to visit, see below for what we think are five of the best hidden gems in Paris.
This vineyard has remained in the Montmartre area of Paris for over 800 years, and is now the last remaining vineyard in the capital city. The best time to visit is in October, when the grapes are harvested during the annual La Fete des Vendanges festival. You can also see inside the vineyard during this month; while there are good views of the area all year round, visitors are not permitted to enter during the rest of the year.
If you’re looking for some more bohemian art outside of the Louvre, check out this restored art gallery on the Rue de Rivoli. Once an artist’s squat in the 1800s, the building now includes 30 artist’s studios, an exhibition space and a concert venue.
Built in 1920, this fabulous picture house was designed in a style inspired by the 1917 film Cleopatra . It fell into disrepair, but was restored and reopened in 2013. Film fans can visit to watch a screening, take in the beautiful architecture, and pay a visit to the bar and secret rooftop.
Just a few minutes from the Gare de Lyon, Rue Crémieux is a charming picturesque street full of colourful pastel painted houses. It’s popularity is growing thanks to social media apps such as Instagram, but it is still a residential street, so respect those who live there and visit early to beat the crowds.
Created by banker Albert Kahn in the late 19th century, these gardens on the west side of Paris cover four hectares and feature different zones - including an English garden, French garden and Japanese-style garden. There’s also a museum where visitors can view Kahn’s vast collection of photographs.
