How to get organised for moving day

Boxes in a room

For many in the UK, a house move is seen as one of the most stressful life experiences that they face. As people tend to move multiple times in their life, it may be helpful to learn more about how to take control of the situation by getting organised ahead of a big moving day.

With a bit of organisation and planning, there’s no reason why moving day shouldn’t flow smoothly and be a stress-free experience. Follow our tips below to get organised ahead of the day:

Start packing as early as possible

Save yourselves a lot of stress by setting a realistic timing plan for packing. This is probably one of the most important things you can do to make sure that you and your family don’t fall into a panic on moving day.

For most house moves, we’d recommend starting to pack at least six weeks before the move day. This will give you enough time to declutter, sort through your possessions and give away items that you don’t want to transport to your new home.

Organise and label

Effective labelling can go a long way in ensuring that your removalists can move your things as quickly and effectively as possible. Label both sides of the box as well as the top to make things as easy as possible. We’d advise using colour coded labels with a different colour for each room to make things efficient and to ensure that every box goes into the right room. Include a short description of what is in each box.

Lay down old cardboard to prevent floor damage

Avoid the stress of dents and damage to your floors (old and new) by laying down flattened old cardboard boxes on moving day. Professional removalists take extra care not to cause any damage. However, you can reduce your own stress levels by ensuring that there are no accidental scuff marks left on the floor in the middle of moving day madness.

Search for a local professional moving company

This is one tip that will help you keep on top of moving day. Rather than attempting the move yourselves, hire a professional removals company to help you move all your belongings to your new home safely and professionally. Many removal companies also offer professional packing services. Get quotes from a few local removalists well ahead of the move so you can get someone booked in for the day in time.
